Mom used to tell me that often. It never really made much sense to me. I knew what I wanted, so what was wrong with asking for it? Well, I thought I knew.
She would also say, "You got what you asked for!" I guess I did, but I didn't think it would pan out that way. I didn't understand.
Many years later, and a few years ago, I was walking into a post office. Ahead, and outside the office, was a woman chanting, "Change. Change, anyone?" It was a quite common thing to do in the valley of Los Angeles, when one had nothing better to do. You didn't even have to be hungry or homeless, and many were not.
Anyway, as I approached her outstretched, upward turned palm, I stopped and reached into my pocket. In Those Days, I carried my folded paper money in my left pants pocket, along with my change. Upon removing the wad, I separated the bills in front of her, and gave her the remaining "change." I think all in all, she got a few pennies and dimes, maybe a quarter, but not totalling more than 50 cents or so.
And, she saw the small and large bills that I retained. And, she had that confused look that I once had on her face, as I said to her, "Be careful of what you ask for."
The day before Martin Luther King Day, a friend stopped by the Thought Dock and asked me if I had heard that the President had pledged 100 Million Dollars for Haiti relief. And, he asked where all that money would come from.
Actually, I support the relief effort. So much so in fact, that I want America to annex Haiti so that we can build another missile base there. Not a bad return for giving up a bunch of granola bars. Remember WIIFM (What's in it for me) from that prior post?
So knowing that most everyone around here is liberal, I asked my friend whether he voted for the Long Legged MacDaddy. He told a long story of how he hadn't voted in years, but when the MacDaddy came along with his promise of "Change," he was excited. So, like some many others, he ran right out, registered to vote, and then help elect him. I told my friend, "Be careful of what you ask for." He could only reply, "Yeah, I know," and said he would never again vote the liberal ticket.
And, congrats to those of you in Massachusetts yesterday that came to their senses by following the Thoughts of the Dock. May the Kennedys rest in peace.

Amazing turn of events yesterday in Massachusetts! :) Finally, some GOOD news in the world of politics.
ReplyDeleteOne day on my drive home from work cruising in the fast lane about 75 mph or so, up comes this motorcyclist flying past me seriously about 90 mph or so.....And I thought to myself that dude is going to kill himself.... Well up about 10 miles later up the road a cop had pulled him over to citation him. His bike was still standing on the kick stand and he was lying down on the shoulder like he was having a bad day.
ReplyDeleteLater I found out he had commited suicide.
The moral of the story....Be carefull what you think about let alone what you ask for.
Stranger days are coming my freinds.
i have been thinking about this post most of the day. at first i wasn't going to comment, i mean really, why should i. you obviously have your thoughts on this etched into your brain from a very early time in your life.
ReplyDelete"be care of what you ask for."
well i have decided to comment, because i think you just might be mistaken. look at the same story, but from a different angle.
you went out of your way to give this young lady youre "change" as that is what she asked for. perhaps she was humbly asking for change because she was a bit embarrassed about "begging". you purposely let her see the wad of paper money you had in your pocket, made no bones over that....and in a mighty, arrogant way, you further snubbed her with, "be careful of what you ask for." but you know what. her Provider would provide whatever change she did need...it didn't have to come from you and you alone. and i believe she rolled her eyes at your selfishness and your arrogancy, very well knowing that her needs would be met, that she could trust God to meet those needs because He promises He will.
I remember another one of mom's "mom-isms". She always warned "don't do it ~ if your heart is not in it or if it can't be done with a cheerful heart." so i don't believe the beggar lacked for your heart....i believe you did. hopefully, you have gained enough wisdom to see and understand that. those were those days. make right with these days. bear His fruit that He may be glorified. Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Gentleness, Goodness, Faithfulness and always,,,Self-control.
this is not an admonishment, just a different perspective.
i love you.
Geo-and a mundane perspective at that.
