In Those Days, I always thought that a professional was one that obtains his expertise by spending an extraordinary amount of time getting a formal education in a specific field. People like scientists, doctors, lawyers, bankers, morticians, professors, and clergy, were called professionals.
And then there were experts. These were people who developed a particular knowledge of a subject though personal experience, training, and lower level education such as trade schools. People like artists, plumbers, cement workers, janitors, auto mechanics, police officers, gardeners, and the like.
Now Days, it seems everyone calls himself a professional. And it seems a professional is now defined as anyone who gets paid for his skill or expertise. In addition to the skills previously mentioned, atheletes, entertainers, journelists, gamblers, fishermen, photographers, thieves, janitors, and writers, all call themselves professionals (send me your check so I call call myself a professor of wisdom).
I once trusted any professional. I never questioned my doctor, an attorney or banker's advice, and clergymen were the best. But now, it seems many professionals are driven by their greed for power and riches. And now, I really trust a very few of those calling themselves professionals. Attorneys are at the top of my list. If you've every testified in court, or even watched a trial on TV, you know what I mean. Bankers and financial professionals come in a close second because they truly don't care about you, just your assets, and will do anything to get a piece of them. Doctors are a distant 3rd, but are rising as I see them writing precriptions for heavy drugs whenever the see fit. Some are killing more people than they save. A prescription for marijuana to treat allergies? And although the clergy have not yet made mylist of untrusted professionals, some are testing me.
So, what's the point here? The point is that this place is one toke over the line when examined through the Thought Dock.

you need to be watching for helicopters and sniffing dogs.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more about the lawyers! And that includes both sides...defense attorneys and prosecutors both do what they can to manipulate the laws!
ReplyDeleteMy second is car salesmen. I'd probably agree with you on the doctor thing but I don't see one that often. But I will say animal docs never seem to know what they're talking about!

You forgot or intentially forgot to mention the fuzz, pigs, cops or the man ect. ect. I don't like cops, trust cops or would ever want one to try and protect me or serve me in any way and the same goes of almost every doctor or lawyer out there.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that almost every cop out there thinks they are above the law.
My brother was once a cop for many years and at the time I would of never wanted him to EVER settle a dispute for me or serve me, no way.
But now that he's been retired for a few year I can see the poision of cop mentality leave him and slowly mature into the man God wants him to be.....
I also agree about the cops, generally. But I also know a lot of really good coppers who've done really great things for individual victims and for their communities...all without sacrificing their integrity. One of my favorite things about my job is being able to prey on predators on behalf of people who need that help.

and, i certainly don't think i'm above the law. in fact, i hold myself to a higher standard than that of most citizens (i could start a whole blog on the complexities of that idea). i respect the badge i wear, the department/city/and community i work for. and i'm PROFESSIONAL...i took it upon myself to become educated...not because my profession or department required it.
ReplyDeleteanyway, what exactly do you mean by cop mentality? because i'm certain that we do far more protecting american citizens on american soil with more rules and laws that anyone in the military has to follow. we're trying to "end the war on drugs" ...aka playing a game with crooks who have a different set of rules, or should i say no rules? then, we have victims who recant their testimony and witnesses who "just don't want to get involved", and defense attorneys who manipulate the laws all for the sake of the defendant's rights.
so for a cop to be a little disgruntled and frustrated with "the system" after 30 years of service isn't a real surprise. in fact, it'd be nice (to say the least) for someone to do something FOR A COP FOR ONCE, as opposed to the cop always having to do things for idiots (again, generally speaking) who can't take care of themselves.

You seem to forget too soon little one, protect and to serve, nothing else.
ReplyDeleteI pay my fair share and above in taxes, cops don't like you to smile at them or waive either.
Sooo.... what is it that you need ? a marching band perhaps?
How weird.....
It is more than protecting and serving. It's a whole lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's that cops don't like people to smile and wave. However, I DON'T appreciate it when 15-50 year old boys cat call at me. The other day, some guy in his 50's asked me on a date...while I was at work? RUDE! I also **HATE** being interrupted when I sit down to eat on duty. So, please, smile and wave. But we're people too!
Do I need a marching band...no. But I don't call the police for the kinds of things I go to calls for. But, if someone would PLEASE mow and edge my grass, I would love it!
