Remember these? Beatnik - Hobo - Bum - Vagrant - Pan Handler - Derelict - Transient - Vagabond - Gypsy - Hermit - Mooch - Drone - Parasite - Squatter - Freeloader - Stowaway - Beggar - Carpetbagger - Street Urchin.
Isn't the English language wonderful? All of these terms, and many more I'm sure, are now obsolete and have been replaced by the term "Homeless Person." Are we just trying to be a kinder and gentler society by not offending these maggots of society, or are we just afraid to call them what they are?
And we have "Little People, Hearing, Speaking, Sight, Height, Weight , Skeleton, Age, Mental, Skin disability" classes. What ever happened to using words like "Dwarf, Midget, Deaf, Dumb, Blind, Tall, Fat, Gimp, Senior, Retarded, or Pimpled Faced" to describe peoples physical attributes. I fit into several of these categories myself and I'm not opposed to someone calling me a fat old man. Call it as you see it. Makes it a lot easier to get your point across.
And that is my point from the Thought Dock. I'm sure you have yours.

Sis - Simply having a term to describe a particular trait of a person is not bigotry.
ReplyDeleteA bigot is one who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.
Now that I am. I am intolerant of people who can work, can speak English, can stay sober, can be honest, can contribute to society, can respect life, can wave the American flag, can pay their share of taxes, but choose not to. Lord, forgive me for not loving your enemies.
i always liked "oxygen thief" for really dumb people, or "carpet muncher" for lesbians. (threw that last one in for my mom because i know it'd really make her proud).
ReplyDeleteasking the Lord for forgiveness when you're not even trying to change yourself for the better (in this case, perhaps being more tolerant...much like Jesus) probably is blasphemous?
anyway, my dad says i'm too judgmental and I should probably go to church. i'm just callin it like i see it!

(oh, yesterday's unnamed post was mine too. forgot to sign it!)
oh, and i've been meaning to share this with you for a while...(deep breath, here goes!)
ReplyDeletewhen all (well not all, just the perman and salzman girls) were little, we called you "Big Balls David" because even as kids, we knew of your "celebrity status"! this was about the time Grandma died, when you were just runnin the show.
imagine if you will, us little brats calling you that, at that time in your life. i think the point my mom's trying to make is that calling people names in a time they are struggling is extremely hurtful.
remember, "be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle" --plato. there's nothing wrong with being 'kindler, gentler.' it's a display of humility worth making.
